Growing up in the church, music has always played a major role in my daily activities. The effects spirituals had on slaves during that period is something that always stood out to me. Amazed how these songs were said to have elevate the mood of a whole field of individuals, just as well as songs and spirituals do today. The words painted a picture for you to understand how strong they were in faith and also their physical strength as well. What I was not aware of, was the secret songs amongst them. These songs described more of the stiff, rebellious attitude towards reality at that time.Throughout history we continue to use those same techniques to praise and worship or party and network.
The hidden spirituals and stories like a flying fool display the inner thoughts and a spontaneous side of our ancestors. Lyrics that shows that some rather be dead than to be a slave reveals a different shade of the average African American at that time. Even the character from A Flying Fool had his mindset on getting to Heaven and having his wings. With him stealing the wings shows how determine wecan be. Also, how important our beliefs are to us.
